How to Cure a Hangover

With the holidays upon us, many of us will be tempted to drink too much, especially with family stresses caused by excessively high expectations and New Year’s Eve almost here. I’d like to suggest some ways to prevent hangovers that can make the days more difficult and put a damper on your cheer.

Good Tip: If you have overindulged, drink three or four glasses of water before going to sleep. The worst feelings of a hangover are due to dehydration.
Better Tip: Drink in moderation, rotating each alcoholic drink with a glass of water or other non-alcoholic drink. Be sure to eat while drinking to slow your body’s absorption of the alcohol and to help it metabolize at a reasonable rate. Add seltzer to a glass of wine to make what Europeans call a Spritzer.
Best Tip: If you don’t drink alcohol, it’s impossible to get a hangover. Instead, drink seltzer with a slice of lemon or tonic with a wedge of lime.
Watching drunks while you are sober is very entertaining and eye-opening.

  1. Let's see which one of these do you do on a daily basis...hmmm?

  2. I have been sober and watched many drunks make fools of themselves. Those times I was glad it wasn't me.
Too much makes me a happy girl though. :)

  4. It seems to me that a party frequented by my coworkers is NOT a placeto make a fool of ones self. I might carry a drink around, but there is no way I would ever allow myself to become even slightly "buzzed" in any situation related to my professional reputation.

  5. It's so true. Such *witnessing* is entertaining and often eye-opening!

  6. Good tip, but though they may have a word for it, I have been to Europe several times and never once saw anyone drinking a spritzer.

  7. I make it a policy never to drink at parties. I enjoy my wine at home when I know I do not have to go out or drive.
Soon partying will be a thing of the past unless people sleep over because the police are going for a zero tolerance to even one drink when driving.
It's pushing it but maybe its the only way to keep drunks off the road. Today we see beer and marijuana in cars at the same time.
Now thats a high person talking on his cell phone hahahahahaha

  8. I am new to your post from Jeanie's. I agree that having lived in Europe, I have not seen spritzer's there. Also thanks for the hangover advice. I think I am careful with age.

  9. The most effective way to cure a hangover and lose ten pounds of ugly fat at the same time is just cut off your head.

  10. I can make a total fool of MYSELF without being intoxicated! I don't need liquor to help me! These are all good tips -- but the BEST one IS the best!

  11. Another good hangover cure (even tho my best is to not get drunk in the first place) is peanut butter, either on toast or other means of intake--you need about a tablespoon to get the effect you want. Peanut butter is high in B Vitamins, which are depleted from the body when one drinks too much.

While a thiamine tablet will do the same thing, the peanut butter tastes better and the body absorbs it faster.

  14. You are so right. I am always the sober ride for friends and even family. How they act when they have been drinking says a lot about who they really are.

  15. Wise advice, Nessa. Most of us learn this somewhere along the way. And most of us briefly forget it along the way, too. ;) Cheers!

  16. Now why would one want to ruin a perfectly good glass of wine with seltzer! LOL. Seriously, though, good advice, especially about the water. I also find that drinking something fizzy (like a soda) the next morning seems to cut the edge off of a mild hangover.
