Dam

The Tenth Daughter of Memory is having a contest. There are nine muses (prompts) and you write something for each. All nine make up one whole story.

The first muse was “A Random Memory.” Here’s my 1st, called Dark.
The second muse was “A Fear of Writing.” Here’s my 2nd, called Dismal.
What follows is for the 3rd muse, "An Ambiance of Technology."

The whole point is to be wrong. Get a timer that you use for cooking and set it for fifteen minutes. Get out your keyboard and begin typing. There is no stopping for spell checker or to look up the name of that really cool guy who could be the character you know id just perfect for the part of the story where the girl and the boy have a misunderstanding and they begin to hate eachpther. If necessary, we break out the program that has an timer built in and if you stop typing a loud noise sounds in the room and the screen begind to turn pink and then red and if you wait too long it blocks you out so that you have to begin again and be very careful because if you don’t do it right it won’t save what you’ve written.

Shut up that stupid voice in your head that tells you you can not post something for people to see that has tuypos and incoherent thoughts and rambling run on sentences with poor or no punctuation and you ignore your mother who says you make no sense and you will e,mbarrass yourself so you don’t take any chances and you fret over what other people will think and you believe the world will end and you’ll die and never recover and everything is carved in stoone.

But there’s this keyboard that allows you to keep typing and you don’t look at the screen and you know that later if you want you can cut and paste and re-type or delete or you can post it and change it later or maybe you could just keep typing and see what happens and then put it out there for the whole world to see and it doesn’t. You will live and it doesn’t change the value of you as a person and the whole thing is crap but its your crap and so you hold it close while letting it go and you don’t change anything even though you have spell checker to counter act your inability to spell worth a damn and you have dictionary.com to help you find the perfect word when your brain refuses to retrieve it from the locker inside your skull.

But you know once you start using all of the cool tools available they are really ways to block the thoughts and ideas. It is best to spit them out. Let them spew from your mind and directly to the paper with no fence or wall in between. Burst the dam that keeps creativity at bay and say “fuck you” to that voice that makes you miserable and stifled and incomplete.

  5. I'm pretty sure I'd die if I posted a typo.. and it was pointed out to me.

Please don't point out my failings.

  6. I had a write every day blog for years, and one of my favourite things to do would be to put dinner on, write until the timer went off, and just finish the thought/sentence and hit post as soon as it did. Every day I wrote for a different length of time, and it really was downright exhilarating.

  9. I love bursting the dam. Some of my best posts come when I stop thinking about what others think and listen to my heart.

  10. Oh I remember those days with my typewriter. But look, I still can read yours and love your raw emotions in this piece..

  11. Sometimes, you just have to let it all out- uncensored, unfiltered and raw. Everyone should read this! :)

  12. That was plain and simply the best thing I've ever read. That voice too often stops me from saying what I wanted and edits what I wrote. I'm bookmarking this one so when it starts talking I can tell it to fuck off.

    just awesome.

  13. Yes. Good evocation of this technology's pros and cons.

  14. I don't think I could ever or have ever written that way. Usually, I edit as I write. And I always write at the computer, because my handwriting is so abysmal.

    I love your stories!

  15. I really relate to that approach. I'd never write anything, if I had to edit as I wrote. Heck, I've started posting stories that I don't yet have an ending to.

Today you've demonstrated how great raw writing can really be. Nice work.

  16. Much like brainstorm - speak first, edit later.

  17. OMG, I know exactly what you are talking about. It takes me a week just to write a short blog post!

  18. I love it that you seem so free to be yourself and just write what comes into your mind. In comparison, I feel like I'm tight and bundled up. :)

  19. Thanks for being real. Your work is sincere and effective.

  20. this is so true. You brain can process words spelled incorrectly and if you compare to the way the English Language is being killed today anyway......you last sentence is right. :)

  22. That took a lot of courage to write uncensored, raw and honest.
    Well done, Nessa.

I am enjoying reading your stories.

  23. Good read, Nessa. I guess they don't have to fit together?

Did you know that Blogger has a spell checker? It is the ABC button and for sure it won't let you use such spelling as tuypos.

  24. As far as I'm concerned that's what the editing/polishing stage is for. :)

  25. Ah, the FU is what I have been missing! ;)

  26. well...i'm a non writer and i just thought i was the only one that wrote like that...although i can't help it if the spell checker is inside my head...it's always been there.

but...dictionary.com will be waiting for me next time i can't find the right word...never thought of that.
