Echoes

The past speaks to me
at times when I least
expect it, when I least
want to hear it, when I am least
able to deal with it.
It has a power far
beyond its value, rattling round
the inside of my head, bouncing
from ear to ear and back again
until I wish I could dash my brains
out on the walls of a padded cell,
the white cushions absorbing
the blood sprays of memories
haunting me.

  1. Oh, those blasted memories. So true - they just pop up when we least expect it.

Really loved this poem, Nessa. Though please don't do any brain bashing! :)

  5. Yes...they have a way of doing exactly that. Blasted memories. Why can't it all be simple? I guess because then, there'd be no growth.

  7. How difficult it is to move on sometimes - and just when we think we're victorious, back comes the blackness and bleakness.

  8. A great expression of how unbidden memories can haunt our brains. I would say you have touched a nerve with more than of few of us.

  13. Regret makes memories dangerous. Affection makes them sentimental. It's all a matter of perspective.

  14. Hi Nessa. I like the fact that the title is not mentioned explicitly in the poem.

  15. Thank you for your nice comment.

The past has been prelude to much of my life these past few months as I left my teaching career to launch out on something new in a new city. I keep thinking of what WAS, and wishing I would have taken a leap of faith at a younger age and perhaps done it differently. But then, my future would not be the present I am currently living.
